Biotech Market Today: Stock-Specific Catalysts Take Center Stage

Share

Biotech markets were little changed at midday Monday, with both the SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (XBI) and Nasdaq Biotechnology Index (NBI) trading near flat. Beneath the quiet index performance, however, clinical updates, regulatory developments and dealmaking produced sharp moves in individual names.

Clinical catalysts led the day’s positive action. Xencor shares rose as much as 16% after the company announced plans to present early-stage data for renal cell carcinoma antibody XmAb819 at ESMO in October. Nuvation Bio gained as much as 12% following encouraging long-term Phase 2 data for safusidenib in IDH1-mutant glioma and the announcement of two additional studies. Armata Pharmaceuticals climbed approximately 18% after reporting progress toward a Phase 3 trial of AP-SA02, its treatment for antibiotic-resistant infections.

On the regulatory front, the FDA granted Fast Track designation to Oncolytics Biotech’s pelareorep combination for squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal. Investors are also watching upcoming FDA decision dates for Otsuka’s centanafadine for ADHD on July 24 and a MannKind application on July 26.

Dealmaking remained active. Tempus AI agreed to acquire cancer-testing company Personalis for approximately $1.7 billion, or $16.25 per share. Halozyme announced a global ENHANZE licensing collaboration with Incyte, while Samsung Biologics launched a CHF 1.5 billion cash offer for Swiss peptide manufacturer PolyPeptide. Separately, Eli Lilly-backed Scribe Therapeutics filed to raise as much as $107.2 million in a U.S. IPO.

Today’s market reinforces an emerging theme for the second half of 2026: biotech performance is becoming increasingly driven by company fundamentals rather than broad macroeconomic forces. The NBI was already up approximately 18% year to date in early July, supported by improving healthcare sentiment, sustained deal activity and more than $9.1 billion of biotech venture funding during the first half.
